AI Leaders are Sounding the Alarm. Congress Needs to Act.
Recently, former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit his role and warned of an industrywide rush to build AI systems that can improve themselves and, in turn, destroy humanity. In response, a lead scientist for Anthropic, Evan Hubinger, casually asserted that the industry did, in fact, “earnestly believe” there is a more than ten-percent chance “AI could kill all humans” in the next decade.
This technology is unlike anything that we’ve seen before. When we turned on the internet, it didn’t have autonomy. When we created the nuclear weapon, it didn’t have the decision-making power to drop itself. But, with AI, Dr. Frankenstein is telling us the monster is on the loose. Congress needs to act.

It’s time to get everyone at the table—experts, skeptics, regulators, and government—to rein-in this technology before it’s too late.
What I’m doing about it:
That’s why I’m calling for the creation of a bipartisan Senate Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence. Such a committee would hold hearings in response to national security concerns; assess the risks to children, consumers, privacy, civil rights, elections, and critical infrastructure; and examine the energy and infrastructure demands of AI.
However, there’s a notable holdout—one person who doesn’t think we need to seriously regulate AI.
You guessed it: President Trump.
On multiple Truth Social rants, he rejected the idea of placing guardrails on AI, saying that the only control needed is “a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” He also came to the defense of data centers, writing, “There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China. WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS!”
Americans are rightfully scared about what’s happening right now. They’re scared that their jobs are going to be taken. They’re scared that their lives are going to be taken. They’re scared of the unknown. But the president just doesn’t seem to agree. That should tell you all you need to know about who he fights for and what concerns him most (hint: it’s not the affordability crisis or AI, but his ballroom and golden arch).
AI is likely to be one of the most transformative technologies in human history. It has already improved productivity across industries, expanded access to expert-level knowledge, and been used for groundbreaking medical research. We need to keep the pace and place guardrails on this technology before it’s too late.
See what I had to say:
